Reichstein Medaille

Die Verleihung der Reichstein-Medaille soll dazu beitragen die Wahrnehmung und Anerkennung der Pharmazeutischen Wissenschaften in der Bevölkerung zu fördern. Sie erinnert an die Verdienste des Schweizer Chemikers und Nobelpreisträgers Tadeus Reichstein, der 1932 die Synthese der Ascorbinsäure (Vitamin C) entwickelte und damit dessen industrielle Produktion ermöglichte.

Preisträger

Die Reichstein-Medaille wird von der SAPhW an international anerkannte Persönlichkeiten vergeben, die sich um die Förderung der pharmazeutischen Wissenschaften in den Bereichen Forschung, Lehre und Praxis direkt oder indirekt besonders verdient gemacht haben.

Tadaeus Reichstein

Von 1938 bis 1950 war Tadeus Reichstein Leiter des Pharmazeutischen Instituts und von 1946 bis 1960 Leiter des Instituts für Organische Chemie, beides an der Universität Basel.

Während seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn wurde er mit vielen Ehrungen und Auszeichnungen bedacht. Für die Isolierung, Strukturaufklärung und Synthese wichtiger Hormone der Nebennierenrinde erhielt er 1950 den Nobelpreis für Medizin, den er mit den amerikanischen Wissenschaftlern Edward. C. Kendall und Philip S. Hench teilte.

Tadeus Reichstein ist am 1. August 1996, kurz nach seinem 99. Geburtstag, verstorben.

In einem Artikel der Neuen Zürcher Zeitung vom 23. Juli 1997, anlässlich seines 100. Geburtstages, wurde auf ein Interview mit Tadeus Reichstein Bezug genommen, in dem er betonte, dass die grössten Ehrungen, die er je in der Schweiz erhalten habe, die Verleihung des Marcel Benoist Preises in 1948 und die Schaffung der Reichstein-Medaille für besondere Verdienste in den pharmazeutischen Wissenschaften, durch die damalige SGPhW, gewesen seien.
