Reichstein Medaille
Die Verleihung der Reichstein-Medaille soll dazu beitragen die Wahrnehmung und Anerkennung der Pharmazeutischen Wissenschaften in der Bevölkerung zu fördern. Sie erinnert an die Verdienste des Schweizer Chemikers und Nobelpreisträgers Tadeus Reichstein, der 1932 die Synthese der Ascorbinsäure (Vitamin C) entwickelte und damit dessen industrielle Produktion ermöglichte.
Preisträger
Die Reichstein-Medaille wird von der SAPhW an international anerkannte Persönlichkeiten vergeben, die sich um die Förderung der pharmazeutischen Wissenschaften in den Bereichen Forschung, Lehre und Praxis direkt oder indirekt besonders verdient gemacht haben.
Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Katalin Karikò
Die SAPhW ehrt Frau Prof. Dr. Dr. h.c. Katalin Karikó mit der Reichstein-Medaille für ihre Verdienste um die Entwicklung der mRNA-Technologie. Lange wurde diese Technologie für die Arznei- und Impfstoffentwicklung als nicht geeignet angesehen. Es ist der unermüdlichen Arbeit von Pionieren wie Frau Prof. Karikó, gegen grosse Widerstände und mit Hartnäckigkeit durchgeführt, zu verdanken, dass mRNA-Impfstoffe zur Bekämpfung der Corona-Pandemie heute Realität geworden sind. Im Jahr 2023 erhielt sie dafür gemeinsam mit Drew Weissman den Nobelpreis.
2021
Prof. Dr. Gerd Volkers
Prof. Gerd Folkers erhielt diese bedeutende Auszeichnung für seine grossen Verdienste als Wissenschaftler und Universitätsdozent, sowie für seine bedeutenden Beiträge zur Gestaltung der Pharmazie-Ausbildung an den Schweizer Universitäten. Er war Gründungsmitglied und erster Präsident der SGPhW und leitet heute das Collegium Helveticum, eine von der ETH Zürich und der Universität Zürich gemeinsam getragene Einrichtung zur Erforschung neuer wissenschaftlicher Perspektiven aus interdisziplinären Prozessen.
2014
Jean-Pierre Lorent
Zum ersten Male wurde die Reichstein-Medaille für überragende Verdienste in pharmazeutischen Dienstleistungen verliehen. J.-P. Lorent's ausserordentliches Lebenswerk bestand in der Umsetzung der Ideen der Gründungsväter des Schweizer Toxikologischen Informationszentrums, welches heute international für seinen kostenlosen Service für jedermann anerkannt ist und seit seiner Gründung geholfen hat, zahlreiche Menschenleben zu retten. Diesen hervorragenden Ruf hat das Tox-Zentrum nicht zuletzt dem in seiner Art sehr bescheidenen, aber auch zielstrebig und hart arbeitendem J.-P. Lorent zu verdanken.

Werner Glatt
Werner Glatt, Ehrenpräsident und Firmengründer der Glatt Industriegruppe, wurde ausgezeichnet für seine langjährigen Verdienste als Unternehmer und seine Kooperation mit Universitäten zur Förderung der Pharmazeutischen Wissenschaften.
2002
Prof. em. Dr. Richard Ernst
Prof. em. Dr. Richard R. Ernst erhielt 1991 den Chemie-Nobelpreis für seine bahnbrechenden Beiträge zur Entwicklung der hochauflösenden magnetischen Kernresonanz-Spektroskopie (NMR), die damit zu einem bedeutenden diagnostischen Werkzeug der Medizin wurde. Nach seiner Promotion bei der ETH in Zürich im Jahre 1962, arbeitete er fünf Jahre in Kalifornien, kehrte 1972 nach Zürich zurück und wurde im Jahre 1976 Ordentlicher Professor am Polytechnischen Institut Zürich. Verstorben 4. Juni 2021.
2000
Prof. Dr. Rolf Zinkernagel
Prof. em. Dr. Rolf Martin Zinkernagel, Professor für experimentelle Immunologie an der Universität Zürich und Direktor des gleichnamigen Instituts, wurde im Jahre 1996, gemeinsam mit dem australischen Immunologen Peter Doherty, mit dem Nobelpreis für Medizin ausgezeichnet. Ihre Entdeckung, wie das Immunsystem virusinfizierte Zellen erkennt, ist für die klinische Medizin von grosser Bedeutung. Ihre Erkenntnisse erlauben der Pharmazeutischen Wissenschaft die Entwicklung völlig neuer Impfstoffe.
1997
Prof. em. Dr. William I. Higuchi
Prof. Dr. William I. Higuchi war Professor für Pharmazie und Pharmazeutische Chemie and der Universität von Utah. Er hat über 100 Doktoranden betreut und ist weltweit bekannt als Autor von mehr als 400 wissenschaftlichen Artikel und Buchkapiteln, als Herausgeber des Fachmagazins "International Journal of Pharmaceutics" und seine führende Rolle auf dem Gebiet der Wirkstoff-Freisetzung. Prof. Higuchi ist durch seinen bedeutenden wissenschafltichen Beitrag hinsichtlich der Entwicklung mechanistischer Modelle biologisch relevanter Prozesse weltweit bekannt.
1994
Tadaeus Reichstein
Von 1938 bis 1950 war Tadeus Reichstein Leiter des Pharmazeutischen Instituts und von 1946 bis 1960 Leiter des Instituts für Organische Chemie, beides an der Universität Basel.
Während seiner wissenschaftlichen Laufbahn wurde er mit vielen Ehrungen und Auszeichnungen bedacht. Für die Isolierung, Strukturaufklärung und Synthese wichtiger Hormone der Nebennierenrinde erhielt er 1950 den Nobelpreis für Medizin, den er mit den amerikanischen Wissenschaftlern Edward. C. Kendall und Philip S. Hench teilte.
Tadeus Reichstein ist am 1. August 1996, kurz nach seinem 99. Geburtstag, verstorben.
In einem Artikel der Neuen Zürcher Zeitung vom 23. Juli 1997, anlässlich seines 100. Geburtstages, wurde auf ein Interview mit Tadeus Reichstein Bezug genommen, in dem er betonte, dass die grössten Ehrungen, die er je in der Schweiz erhalten habe, die Verleihung des Marcel Benoist Preises in 1948 und die Schaffung der Reichstein-Medaille für besondere Verdienste in den pharmazeutischen Wissenschaften, durch die damalige SGPhW, gewesen seien.
